Samaná Peninsula Beaches: Las Terrenas, Bonita, Rincón & Las Galeras

Samaná is not Punta Cana. The peninsula sits on the opposite, north-eastern side of the country, and none of these beaches are a quick hop from your Bávaro resort. Treat it as a separate region: a long day trip at the very least, and usually better done as an overnight or a few nights in Las Terrenas or Las Galeras.
Why bother? Because this is a different Dominican Republic. Palm-backed coves with no resort wall behind them, a fishing-village pace, humpback whales in the bay from January to March, and beaches like Playa Rincón that regularly turn up on "best in the Caribbean" lists for good reason.
This guide runs east along the peninsula: Las Terrenas and Playa Bonita first, then Rincón, Las Galeras, and the remote coves of Madama and Frontón at the tip.
Las Terrenas: The Town and Its Beaches

How to plan it
Pick a base. Las Terrenas has the most restaurants, hotels and nightlife, and Playa Bonita and Cosón are minutes away. Las Galeras is smaller and quieter, and it is the jumping-off point for Rincón, Madama and Frontón, several of which are easiest to reach by boat.
Go in the dry season, December to April, and aim for January to March if you want whale watching on the same trip. Roads to the remote beaches are rough; the sources above repeatedly recommend a 4×4 or a boat tour, so do not plan on a rental hatchback.
If you only have one free day from Punta Cana, an organised Samaná whale-watching tour is the realistic option. Trying to see these beaches on a single day's return drive is not.
