Excursions in Punta Cana: Every Kind of Tour, and Five We Did

By PuntaCana·Jan 27, 2026·6 min read

Almost everything in Punta Cana is sold as an "excursion", from a parasail off the beach to a full day across the country. So the first question is not "which tour?" but "how much of a day do I want to give up?"

Island trips like Saona and Catalina are long days with early pickups. Buggies, ziplines and Scape Park are half-days close to the resorts. Whale watching, Cayo Levantado and the El Limón waterfall are on the far side of the country: think very long day, not a morning out.

The first half of this guide lists every category of tour you will be offered. The second half is what happened when we did five of them ourselves, with the prices we paid.

Why Punta Cana Excursions Are Unforgettable

Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion, Punta Cana excursions allow travelers to explore beyond the resort. From snorkeling and sailing to off-road buggies and jungle adventures, each tour combines natural beauty, excitement, and memorable experiences. Families, couples, and solo travelers alike will find something to enjoy, creating lasting memories in this Caribbean paradise. Overall, Punta Cana’s excursions offer the perfect mix of adventure, nature, culture, and convenience, making it a top choice for travelers looking to experience the Dominican Republic to its fullest.

Five Excursions We Actually Did

1. Start with a Buggy Ride Through the Dominican Countryside

Our adventure began with one of Punta Cana’s most popular excursions: a buggy tour. Perfect for groups, couples, or solo travelers, this off-road experience takes you deep into the countryside where you'll encounter rugged trails, local villages, and scenic landscapes. Highlight: The tour includes a stop at a cenote, a natural freshwater sinkhole surrounded by lush greenery. It's the perfect spot for a refreshing swim and a quick snorkeling session or free diving (apnea). Cost: Buggy tours cost us between $30 and $60 USD per person at the time of our trip, depending on the tour company and inclusions — check current rates before you book. Pro Tip: Ask your hotel about tour partnerships they often offer discounted rates.

2. Swim in a Cenote Inside a Mysterious Cave

Cenotes in Punta Cana offer a unique swimming experience especially when they’re inside caves. We visited a cenote located 8 meters below the surface, nestled in a dark cavern. It felt like stepping into another world cool, quiet, and completely magical. Experience Tips:
  • Bring water shoes for better grip inside the cave.
  • Expect only about 10 minutes of swim time, so make the most of it!
  • It’s mildly claustrophobic but completely worth it.

3. Cultural Tasting: Dominican Coffee and Chocolate

No adventure is complete without tasting the local flavors. Midway through our buggy tour, we visited a cultural house where we were offered samples of:
  • Dominican coffee: rich, sweet, and perfectly roasted.
  • Local chocolate and cacao: gritty in texture but full of authentic flavor.
This stop adds a meaningful cultural layer to your adventure, letting you connect with the local community and their traditions.

4. Relax at Playa Macao

After the dusty trails and cave swims, it’s time to unwind. We headed to Playa Macao, one of Punta Cana’s most beautiful beaches. It’s public, lively, and perfect for a mid-day dip to cool off. Pro Tip: Bring a change of clothes you will get dirty and wet during the buggy and cenote portions of the trip.

5. End the Day with a Parascending Adventure

To wrap up our adventure-packed day, we tried parascending also known as parasailing. Picture this: soaring high above the turquoise waters, attached to a parachute while being pulled by a speedboat. It’s peaceful, exhilarating, and offers one of the best panoramic views of Punta Cana’s coastline. Cost: Prices range from $25 to $40 USD, depending on the agency and duration. Just a heads-up: during parascending, you might get dipped into the ocean for fun so keep your phone safely tucked away unless it’s waterproof!

Prices & Practical Tips for Travelers

Activity Price Range (USD) Notes
Buggy Ride $30 – $60 Includes cenote stop
Cenote Swim Included in buggy tour Inside a cave

Absolutely! Punta Cana offers a perfect blend of nature, adrenaline, culture, and relaxation. Whether you're riding a buggy through muddy trails, swimming in mysterious cave cenotes, or flying high over the sea, this destination guarantees unforgettable memories. We left completely enamored with this place, and I’m sure you will too. If you're planning a trip, don’t forget to check out the Punta Cana Gallery for more visual inspiration!

Booking tips that actually matter

Compare the hotel tour desk with beach vendors and online operators, pay attention to pickup windows (shared buses stop at many resorts), and confirm what "included" means for food, drinks and entrance fees. If an island day is your priority, read our Saona Island guide first.
